The Mission of San Luis Obispo
San Luis Obispo was named the “Happiest City in America” and we’d have to agree. San Luis Obispo is a beautiful city located midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles and is home to approximately 45,000 residents. It is the cultural and commercial hub of the central coast and the county seat of San Luis Obispo County. It is home to Cal Poly (California Polytechnic State University) and Cuesta College, a community college. In the downtown area in the plaza is Mission San Luis Obispo de Toloso, the fifth California Mission founded by Father Junipero in 1772. Today it serves as a church and is open to the public. Downtown are numerous intimate boutiques and restaurants. The Fremont Theater is an art deco theater from the 1940′s that still plays first run movies. On Thursday evenings the Farmers Market is held year round on Higuera and the adjoining streets where one can buy fresh fruits and vegetables, shop in the stores and take in live entertainment. Just off Higuera Street between Garden and Broad Streets is Bubblegum Alley where people have been sticking their chewed gum on the walls of the alley since about 1960. Madonna Inn is the famously eccentric inn where each room is decorated in a different theme. The area of Edna Valley has become a well known wine region.
